2011 has been a difficult year for the procurement and supply chain management system in the health sector. Yet, among many challenges, there has been a lot of progress in various areas: the opening of the renovated Centro de Abastecimentos (CA) by the Minister of Health is a good example.
The CA is a large warehouse for medical supplies located in Maputo. I entered the CA one and a half year ago and the CA was very messy: boxes all over, expired items, no lighting, no forklifts, no computerized system. I came back a couple of weeks ago for the inauguration and what I saw left me speechless: floors and roofs had been renovated; boxes were organized in a very orderly racking system, lighting had been provided and with it computers to run the inventory of materials.
